Logo Draft Project

Hello!

For my logo project I decided to create a logo for my very own fashion line. I got this idea from scrolling through Pinterest and Instagram and noticing lots of designer brand logos; some of my favorite were Channel, Versace and Louis Vuitton. My logo relates to my fashion blog because it is for a fashion line!

After scrolling through my phone, I got onto my laptop and looked through Flickr and Pixabay. I searched designer logos and other things like women in dresses, manikins and sketches of outfit designs. After my research, I came across a photo on Pixabay and decided to use it as a reference and alter the appearance of it (link is below/free commercial use). I went back to the illustrator tutorials on our class blog and re-watched the last one in order to cut out the woman in the photo.

After watching the video, I used the pen tool and cut out the silhouette of the women in the dress. Then, I suffered the web looking for fonts I liked and would want to download. After looking through a ton of fonts I finally found one I really liked called Dinasty. I downloaded this font that I found on https://www.dafont.com and created my initials, RF. To make my design pop more I decided to use red as the main color and gray as the stroke color. After having all three elements done, I moved them around to create what I have below.

Some challenges I faced using Illustrator were the gradient tool, the pen tool and moving photos from the front to back. I couldn’t figure out what colors I wanted to use in the gradient tool so I will complete that in my final. The pen tool was hard because I had trouble creating curves. Lastly, I wasn’t able to move my initials to in front of the women silhouette.

For my final draft, I will probably change the colors and make them pop more by using the gradient tool. I played around with yellow and pink and might revert back to those colors. I will also make the silhouette of the woman look more polished in my draft. I may want to alter her dress more and make it less puffy.

  1. For my graphic design logo draft I think it came out very well! I was happy with the way I used the pen tool to cut out the women in the dress. One critique I do have for myself from my peers is that the coloring of my logo is off. The red and gray are a little boring and flat when you first look at them. For my final draft, I want to use the gradient tool within my initials RF. This will be a bit of a challenge for me because I am unsure of what color scheme I want to use. Another thing I think I should’ve added to my design is the phase ‘fashion line’ below to make the logo clearer. One thing I think I did well was keep the design simple yet elegant. I did this by using the silhouette of a women in a dress.

    • I like how you used only a few objects in your design, yet you were able to convey the key elements your brand identity. It is easy to tell from the silhouette and the initials that you used that this is not only a logo for a fashion brand, but a logo your own personal fashion brand. I also think the colors chosen for the design, red and black, were a good choice because it makes not only the individual elements of the letters and the silhouette stand out, but it also makes the design as a whole stand out a lot more and catch the viewer’s attention. One suggestion for improvement would be to perhaps align the silhouette more in the middle of the design, as of right now it appears to be slightly off center. Another suggestion for improvement would be to possibly change the gray outline around the letters of the design to a black one. I think this might make the design more cohesive and also bring more attention to the letters. However, overall, I feel that your design is a good portrayal of your brand and a good example of delivering a lot with simplicity.

  2. Hi there Ruby! I really enjoyed looking at your growth between the sketch draft and what is translated onto illustrator. I think you did a great job on your draft, as I can definitely see inspiration from those top brand designer logos. To make the letters pop, I would recommend to try and make the silhouette behind the letters. It is black and should still be visible, however your initials should be the main focus because that is your brand. I would also think about changing the coloring of the border for the letters. The combination of pitch black in the silhouette and light grey borders don’t really flow. Other than that, I think you did a great job tracing and choosing the silhouette. I also appreciate the extra step of downloading a new font, and not just choosing a basic one. Overall, the logo is sleek, fashion forward, and with some corrections with feedback, it will be a great logo for your brand.

  3. Hi Ruby! I was very interested in your logo design since I am also interested in creating a fashion line and almost chose a similar theme to your blog! One thing that I think you did well with this design is that it is very easy to get an idea on what the logo is for just by looking at. The girl in the dress makes it clear that your logo has something to do with clothes/fashion. One suggestion I have since you said that you struggled with bringing your initials forward is to create your initials on a different layer than the girl with the dress and then you can bring that layer forward. I also think you could maybe change the colors as you mentioned and it would look better since the girl in the dress makes me think it is a more feminine clothing line but the red and grey don’t really agree with this. I like the idea of using a pink and yellow color scheme and think that they would look nice together in a gradient since you mentioned you also wanted to try using the gradient tool.

  4. Hey Ruby! After reading your intro post, I was very intrigued to see how you’d incorporate identifying that your logo was for a fashion company. Upon looking at your logo, I saw you decided to do this by placing a layer with a women’s silhouette in a dress. While I like this approach, and the figure itself, I think its somewhat bold for this simplistic design. I think something you could do to not only accentuate the figure, but balance the boldness, is by send ing the figure to the back so that the letters are layered on top. I think possibly adding a shadow effect would be cool. My second recommendation would be to bring your initials together. Seeing as they are already in a fancy font and initials are typically placed together, I think that would help balance the photo well. Overall, I was a fan of how your logo directly related to your theme in an obvious way without overwhelming the viewer.
